A major focus at Wagner Dentistry is to ensure the long term dental health of our patients. Though well-known for our high quality cosmetic dentistry, at our Las Vegas, NV, dental office we create a custom plan for each patient, and it all begins with optimal dental health. That can mean the use of restorative dentistry, as well as general and cosmetic work. One treatment that almost all patients require is the use of dental crowns.
What are Dental Crowns?
Each of your teeth is composed of two large sections – the roots (in the gum) and the crown (the visible portion of the tooth). The crown is exposed to wear and tear, and can be damaged from decay or injury. Dental crowns are artificial crowns, and you may have heard of them or “caps” as they were called in the past, and it is quite likely that you have one. They are used for a huge number of reasons, including:
- Strengthening a damaged tooth
- On top of a dental implant or root canal
- To cover misshapen or misaligned teeth
- As the finish to an overly large filling
- As the anchor for a dental bridge
- To cover discolored teeth
- As a cosmetic modification
- To restore a tooth that has been worn down
Thus, some of our patients have dental crowns because they needed a filling, and it required the removal of so much of the tooth that we had to cover it with a crown for strength and durability. Of course, some patients may have crowns because they have had an implant or root canal.

The Function of Crowns
When you pay a visit to a dentist office and hear you will need a crown, it is always advisable to have it done. This is because crowns are very functional, and while they do all of the chewing, they also keep your bite properly aligned. Lose one tooth and the surrounding teeth will shift. This changes the bite and can cause grinding, cracking, and damage. Your teeth are less functional when even one is missing, and dental crowns can fill the gaps in addition to providing all of the other benefits already mentioned earlier. There are many pros and cons associated with the procedure.
At our Las Vegas office, we use a specialty lab to custom make each crown. They will be crafted of durable porcelain and colored to match the surrounding teeth. Your smile will benefit in every way possible, and it will take only two visits to have your long lasting, attractive and functional crowns applied.
